Behind the Mask — A Veteran’s Journey Through Law Enforcement 📰 TCOV Veteran Stories #3 There are people in Valrise whose names are well known, and there are others who have spent years serving the city while keeping their identity away from the spotlight. Recently, The Chronicle of Valrise had the opportunity to sit down with one such veteran.   He arrived wearing a mask, choosing to remain anonymous throughout our conversation. Behind that mask was someone who claimed to have spent years working across different law enforcement agencies, experiencing promotions, transfers, resignations, pressure, and the changing nature of policing in Valrise. This is his story.       FROM THE BEGINNING   According to the veteran, his journey in law enforcement began around May 2023, when he joined the San Andreas Police Department (SAPD). He explained that he had initially considered applying earlier, sometime between 2021 and 2023, but circumstances involving another city kept him occupied. When he finally joined SAPD, he started as a Police Officer I. He described those early days as the beginning of a much longer journey through Valrise law enforcement.   THE FIRST CHALLENGE   One of the first major challenges he faced was trying to progress through the ranks. He said that he spent approximately a year working toward becoming a Sergeant, but despite his efforts, he felt that the system was not allowing him to progress. Rather than giving up on law enforcement, he decided to try another path. That decision eventually took him to the Sheriff Department. According to him, the system there initially felt different. He believed that hard work was rewarded more effectively, and within approximately six months, he managed to reach the rank of Sergeant. His responsibilities eventually expanded beyond regular patrol work, including involvement with academy-related duties. But his time there eventually came to an end. He resigned and later returned to SAPD.   BACK TO SAPD   Returning to SAPD gave him another opportunity to continue his career. He once again worked his way toward the rank of Sergeant and continued gaining experience inside the department. However, he said that circumstances eventually changed. According to the veteran, he began taking on more responsibilities outside of SAPD, including work involving a federal agency faction. The increasing workload became difficult to balance. Eventually, he resigned again. But his journey was still far from over.   A NEW ROAD — HIGHWAY PATROL   After leaving SAPD, he applied to the San Andreas Highway Patrol (SAHP). He was accepted and began another chapter of his law enforcement career. He described his time there as relatively peaceful at first. However, as his responsibilities outside the department increased, maintaining the same level of commitment became difficult. Once again, he made the decision to resign. At one point, he also left Valrise for approximately three months. When he eventually returned, he was reinstated and once again found himself back within SAPD, eventually reaching the rank of Sergeant again. For someone who had already experienced multiple departments, promotions and resignations, it was another chapter in a career that seemed to keep bringing him back to law enforcement.   THE MODERN CRIMINAL   During our conversation, the veteran also spoke about how difficult law enforcement has become. In his opinion, fighting criminals today is considerably more challenging than it was in the past. One reason he highlighted was the development of advanced vehicles and equipment. He specifically mentioned criminals having access to vehicles equipped with missiles, making certain situations much more difficult for law enforcement officers. For someone who has spent years on the other side of the law enforcement line, he believes the job has changed significantly.   THE RECRUITMENT BOOM   The veteran also remembered the period when Chief Felicity  took charge. According to him, recruitment increased significantly during that period. For him, this was an important part of the department’s development and showed how leadership could influence the number of people willing to join and serve.   THE ACADEMY AND WHAT COMES AFTER   When asked what advice he would give to new officers, he offered a perspective based on his own experience. He explained that the academy process can sometimes feel like it slows an officer’s progress. However, once an officer gets through the academy and becomes properly cleared, many more opportunities become available. According to him, officers can then explore different divisions and discover areas of law enforcement that suit them. His message to newcomers was simple: the beginning may feel slow, but there are opportunities waiting beyond it.   WHY THE MASK?   Perhaps the most unusual part of the interview was the person sitting behind the mask. Naturally, I asked why he chose to hide his identity. His answer was unexpected. He explained that he wears the mask because people can become easily attracted to him, and he prefers to keep his identity hidden. Whether the reason is humorous, personal, or simply his own way of maintaining privacy, the mask has become part of the identity he presents to Valrise. For this interview, the mask stayed on.   A journey filled with promotions, transfers, pressure, resignations, returns and lessons learned along the way.
